Montrose Avenue
by Pamela Medland

Bricks bloom
blacktop melts in hot
lick of love making
under strung lights
smell of sweet pickle
donkeys braying, samba
swaying in summer nights
and the flowers,
always the flowers

Old men with three-day beards
women in black shawls
bread baking, crusts broken
with thumbs drumming,
drumming, sound of far places
hot alleys melting
in samba swaying
brick baking, dust blooming
praying, playing
