Child's Play

by Nancy Jentsch

Winter branches backlit
by the moon weave
unplottable patterns
of warp and weft:
the witch’s ladder
she could tiptoe
down to the crack
in the devil’s crossroad
unleash infernal laughter
at the loser of a child’s game

But icy moonsnow
frosts the ground
to bite the witch’s toes
should she attempt
to snatch a child’s soul
